about
This one started with an accidental, simple progression on guitar with the ascending guitar line built in, which I quickly recorded to my phone. After playing the chords of the song to my satisfaction, I kept recording and mumble-sang along. Then the entire first verse and chorus came out in one stream of consciousness take. The lyrics unlocked something I’ve pondered a lot: taking care of yourself doesn’t always feel good. I don’t think I could have articulated this better if I had sat down to write it on purpose. I’ve since vowed to trust my subconscious songwriter mind more.
lyrics
Waking Up
(Jon Nolan)
Tell me you’re wasted
Beat up and broken
You’re down in the valley
You’re busted wide open
You’re feeling a feeling
Not so sure of the meaning
Figure what to believe in
You can’t see that you’re grieving
Waking up it feels like — falling down
Waking up it feels like — falling down
Pick up the pieces
The wind is still blowing
It’s hard to move when you’re frozen
It’s hard to know what you’re knowing
You need a connection
To slow down the fear some
Another sensation
A new invitation
Waking up it feels like — falling down
Waking up it feels like — falling down
I have been out of the Wilco loop for a while now, but this album has pulled me back in. I adore it. Tweedy and co. know how to write gentle, heartfelt songs while adding just the right amount of unusual synth additions. The second half of the record ends INCREDIBLY strongly. If you've been out of Wilco for a while like me, check it out. BobandoCommando
The slashing roots rock on “Out On the Line” always makes its way to the kind of triumphant chorus that quickens the pulse. Bandcamp New & Notable Apr 2, 2023
