about
On “Lonely,” I wanted to express myself in the most direct manner possible. I had come to the hard realization that *not* doing this - in life and in music - had frustrating consequences. Lyrically, here, I got right to the point; musically, I was going for a one-chord song, but settled for two. Originally, I thought this song would build like “Downtown” - a song by a Northampton, Massachusetts band called the Drunk Stuntmen. Instead, it starts out loud and just gets louder.
lyrics
I’m down and out,
Like I’ve been dragged around
And I’ve been drained.
That’s how I feel today.
I’d been true to you,
But now you say we’re through.
And I didn’t see it come.
And now we’re done.
You were my one and only.
I feel alone, low, and lonely.
I’ve been ground down,
Jerked and pushed around
And I’ve seen the truth
About selfish you.
You were your one and only.
I feel alone, low, and lonely.
I guess I never knew you,
I know that you’re fine.
I know now you’re fine.
Now that you’ve left town
And left me here to drown
I can see that you
Were more scared than me.
And the pictures that I’ve seen
Of when you were good to me
Have grown old,
And now I know.
When you were my one and only,
I was alone, low, and lonely.
