about

My kids don’t abide hypocrisy and injustice. This song is both literal and metaphorical: part of my job as a Dad is to gently guide my kids; it’s their gift to me that they’ve helped me to evolve. Jon, James, and I used to swim the Packers Falls rapids on the Lamprey River in Durham, New Hampshire – one of the great joys of my childhood, and the scene of Jon’s early ZuZu song “The River.”

lyrics

Climb In The River
(C. Murphy)

We’d go down to the river when summer would come,
Root beer black where the rapids run
And if I’d float on my back where the current was strong, I was fine

But if I decided that I could swim
Like the pickerel darts or the dark eel stings
I’d crash on the rocks, and my head would ring and I’d cry

Climb in the river over the stones
The current will carry us safely I know
Change is coming, come on let’s go
It’s a new day, let go

I remember the time in confession I lied,
It was no big deal, it was just my pride
But to avoid the shame I minimized the truth

And in that room, it was just us three:
The old gray priest, and God, and me
And two of us knew, if not all three, the real truth

Climb in the river over the stones
The current will carry us safely I know
Change is coming, come on let’s go
It’s a new day, let go

And so, you see I share the blame
And you watch me stumble through the changes
But in your eyes the future is clear to me

I walk out into a world unmasked
And I find these stones still in our paths
So, climb on in and on our backs let’s float downstream

Climb in the river over the stones
The current will carry us safely I know
Change is coming, come on let’s go
It’s a new day, let go
